Thomas Rayner

Swimming Teacher and Accredited Coach

I have been a swimming teacher at Ivanhoe Girls’ Aquatics since 2016. My teaching style is heavily influenced by my personal experience as a competitive swimmer and squad coach. I endeavour to prepare my swimmers to potentially enter the world of competitive swimming and many of my former students have made that transition. My classes place a strong emphasis on technique, because I believe being able to swim efficiently and confidently is important to everyone. Understandably not all students are interested in competition however, and I therefore have the flexibility to tailor my sessions to suit the individual. I have always wanted to teach and coach, and I love passing on my knowledge and experience to the next generation of swimmers.

In addition to my teaching experience, I have been employed as an assistant coach with Ivanhoe Aqua Power Swimming Club since early 2017. My primary role there is the running of the Junior and Intermediate Squad programs, while I occasionally step in for the Senior Head Coach in training State and National level athletes. I also represent Ivanhoe Aqua Power as a competitive swimmer, where my main events include the 50m, 100m and 200m Breaststroke. I have swum at Open State level as well as at UniGames National swimming.

I am currently completing an Exercise Science degree at Victoria University with a focus on Sport Practice (coaching and practical exercise science applications). In tandem with the degree I am working towards being an Accredited Exercise Scientist, which I feel complement and inform my role as both swimming teacher and coach.
